Extension of Time to Train Regulations to SMEs Put on Hold

The Government has announced that the Regulations giving the right to request time for training to employees of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) will not be extended this April as previously planned.

Under the right to request time to train, employees are entitled to request time to undertake work relevant training, which their employers must formally consider but which they are entitled to refuse if one of a number of acceptable business reasons applies.

The Regulations have been available to employees of organisations employing more than 250 people since April 2010.

The Regulations were due to be extended to employees of organisations employing up to 249 people (SMEs) in April this year, but the Government has now confirmed that it is “taking further time to examine the potential impact of the Regulations on smaller firms”.
