Changes to Unfair Dismissal Qualifying Period Taking Effect

Changes to the qualifying period for employees wishing to bring unfair dismissal claims come into effect this week. For any person recruited on or after 6 April, the qualifying period for unfair dismissal increases to two years.

People who are already in employment before that date will retain the current one-year qualifying period.

The TUC estimates that around 2.7 million workers across the UK could face an increased risk of losing their jobs as a result of this change to the qualifying period. It is also concerned that the change in the law will increase job insecurity, discriminate against younger workers, part-time women workers and employees from black and ethnic (BME) communities, and encourage more of a ‘hire and fire’ culture in the UK.
