There is general agreement among economists that the UK labour market is expected to see a continued shift towards higher level occupations.
The Working Futures 2007-17 report estimates that by 2017, almost half (47 per cent) of jobs are expected to be in managerial, professional or associate professional roles. However, while the proportion of elementary roles will fall, they are still expected to count for 10 per cent of the jobs in the economy.
There will also be an increase in personal service occupations, as more people will be needed to fill health and social care roles to look after an ageing population.
