Tools to support job search:
Tools to indentify transferable skills are especially relevant for use with older workers. How about trying these with your customers:
- Skills Assessment Tool by Fair Play for Older Workers Project (in Resources)
The basis of the tool, developed specifically for older workers, are open questions that help the individual reflect on all the skills they have developed throughout their lives. ‘Think of yourself not as a job title but as a bundle of skills’ – this could be the motto of the tool.
- Skills Health Check by Next Step (in Useful Links)
An automated tool that produces a report that can be discussed with a Next Step Adviser. Useful for those who are not sure what the right job for them might be.
New content:
We continue on the theme of modern labour market as recruitment practices have changed so much since many of your older customers have been job hunting for the last time.
- candidate testing
The last bulletin highlighted modern recruitment practices employers use to get through large numbers of applications. If your older customer gets through, help them be prepared for testing of their skills. The new page contains a range of example tests for different skills.
- competency based interviews (in Resources)
If your customer is applying for a higher skilled job, check this resource to coach them for a successful interview.
Updates of content on 50+ Works:
- Did you know that women’s State Pension Age (SPA) will reach 65 by November 2018? See updated information on the timetable for equalisation of SPA for men and women in the Finance/Pensions section.
New research materials:
- Update on literature on Age and Employment by Health and Safety Laboratory (last item in Resources)
A thorough reading covering everything from age and productivity to levels of sickness absence. Excellent and up-to-date resource for all those who are interested in popular misconceptions about age. This report will be of particular use to employer engagement teams.
Useful links:
- We have now gathered over a dozen links related to volunteering. The latest additions are TimeBank and RSVP, a specialist volunteer service for older people. Check any of them in the Useful links/Volunteering section.
