Consultancy on Age and Employment

TAEN’s offer for employers

The default retirement age is now virtually phased out, but this is only the beginning.

TAEN now offers employers a specialist source of consultancy service on age management, the wide range of techniques to manage age-related risks which all organisations now need to consider.

Age management considerations should inform all aspects of HR policy and practices. TAEN will make this possible.

TAEN’s international reputation is based on its understanding of the potential of the ageing workforce and the issues organisations face resulting from demographic change. TAEN’s network links individuals and organisations which are all specialists and able to contribute to a fully holistic approach to policy formulation.

Flexible working and flexible retirement will be needed more and more. Do you have sufficient knowledge to scope good practice, gain from the opportunities and avoid the risks of workforce ageing, to which the legal changes form only a small part?

The basic offer
The following are offered on payment of a fee linked to the size of your organisation.

  • Legal compliance check.
  • Transition management (post DRA) discussion.
  • Workforce assessment including demographic analysis, demographic risk and policy assessment - discussion of results with HR management.
  • Age strategy - one to one briefing / consultation on your organisation’s needs and suggestions from our ideas bank.

Additional charged for services are structured around the following modular options:

  • Surveys of workforce and management opinion and practices – we will use your existing climate or employee opinion surveys or design a free standing survey appropriate to your organisation to elicit basic information. Employees answer in confidence and TAEN provides report and action suggestions.
  • Age Driver workshop – this is an interactive workshop designed to achieve a similar result to a survey but supported by probing questions and expert facilitation. We prepare a report highlighting key issues for attention.
  • Scoping policy from international examples – we will draw on examples of best practices internationally to propose interventions or tools to suit your organisation. We demonstrate the use of tools or undertake the tasks directly.
  • Workshops, training and support, seminars/webinars.

Specific areas where support can be provided
We can provide short, sharp checks or more detailed studies in any combination of the following:

  • Age legal compliance and policy review
  • Sickness and turnover analysis
  • Performance management assessment
  • Retirement, moving on or career change discussions
  • Job change and life-long learning
  • Flexible working and flexible retirement
  • Health and well being
  • Disability and older workers
  • Knowledge transfer
  • Recruitment and initial training
  • Managing and building intergenerational groups.

In each area there may be key issues that relate to employee age, the ageing workforce more generall,y and the maximisation of value.

If you have concerns that your policies may need strengthening in one of these areas we can outline options in a short briefing. More detailed studies or work programmes can follow if necessary.  We can draw on our experience internationally and in the UK to suggest best practices for your organisation.

Questions to Consider

  • How will you manage competency and performance in the new era without fixed retirement?
  • How will you ensure that workers who have chosen to work longer are fully engaged with their jobs?
  • How will you ensure a continued supply of opportunities for younger workers whilst making the best use of experienced older employees?
  • Do your younger managers have the right skills and knowledge to manage a more age diverse workforce including older workers with immense experience?
  • With demographic changes exacerbating skills shortages in some areas of employment, the retention of key skills and personnel will become increasingly important.
